PPF Vinyl or TPU: Which Paint Protection Film Suits Your Tesla?

PPF Vinyl oder TPU: Welche Lackschutzfolie passt zu deinem Tesla?

With almost every one of our precut sets you face the same decision: Standard PPF or High-End TPU. The surcharge is around 50 percent. For the Frontkit for the Model Y „Juniper" that means 249 against 373.50 euros.

A good four out of ten customers choose the more expensive film. That does not mean it is the right one for everybody. Here is what actually sets them apart and when each one fits.

Two things stand out here, and both are commonly misrepresented in comparisons:

Thickness is not the distinguishing feature. The Standard film is even marginally thicker. Anyone selling TPU on thickness has missed the point. It is about how the material behaves, not about micrometres.

Both are completely transparent. The colour of your paint does not change with either of them. On our product photos the films are tinted purely for illustration.

What the film actually protects against day to day

Before we get to the differences, a word on why anyone applies film in the first place. It is rarely the fear of one big incident. It is the sum of the small ones that build up over the years.

Important with insects, bird droppings and tree sap: they attack the film too if they sit on it for too long. Wash them off as soon as you spot them, warm water and a microfibre cloth are enough. With the High-End TPU everything comes off more easily thanks to the stronger water repellency, with the Standard film you need a little more patience. What counts in both cases: it sits on the film and not in the clear coat, where it would otherwise eat its way in.

The key point here: for almost everything that happens in daily use, the two films do the same job. Both are a sacrificial layer between the environment and the paint. A shopping trolley scraping along the door leaves its mark in the film instead of the paint, no matter which of the two is on there.

And where even the best film stops

  • No film prevents dents. It is 0.16 millimetres thick, it protects the surface, not the metal underneath. If someone swings their door hard into yours, you get a dent with perfectly intact film over it.
  • Deep scratches go through. A key dragged across the door under pressure, or a kerb you catch: anything that cuts through the film reaches the paint as well.
  • The film itself is then damaged. That is not a fault, that is its job. A single panel can be reordered and replaced without anyone having to respray. That is exactly the point of it.

And the areas where this happens most often are the same on every Tesla: the front bumper and the leading edge of the bonnet for stone chips, the door sills and the lower door area for everything your own tyres throw up, and the boot sill when loading.

What self-healing actually is

A lot of nonsense gets told about this in the industry, so let us take it step by step.

TPU is an elastomer. Put simply: a plastic that behaves like a rubber band, you can deform it and it pulls itself back together. Strictly speaking the self-healing effect does not sit in the TPU core, but in a thin elastic surface layer, the topcoat.

A fine scratch, from the car wash or from a microfibre cloth with a grain of dust in it, does not cut through that layer. It pushes the polymer chains aside, much like a finger pressed into memory foam. What remains is a tiny groove. It only becomes visible because it refracts light differently from the smooth surface next to it.

Warmth makes the chains mobile again. As soon as they can move, they slide back into their lowest-energy arrangement, the groove flows shut, the surface is smooth again.

Sunshine on a warm day is enough for that. Warm water over the spot speeds it up to a few seconds.

On the term „shape memory": you often read it in this context and it is misleading. Shape memory polymers are a material class of their own that snap back into a previously programmed shape when triggered. What happens with a paint protection film is simpler and every bit as reliable: elastic recovery.

Where the limit is

Anything that cuts through the topcoat stays. A deep scratch down into the TPU layer, a tear, a stone chip that punches through the film: none of that heals. That is not a product weakness but a material limit, and it applies to every manufacturer alike.

Self-healing is exclusively about the fine marks that make a surface look dull over the years.

And the Standard film?

It cannot do that. It protects the paint from stone chips just as well, it simply collects over the years the fine wash marks your paint would otherwise have taken.

That is its job at heart. It is the sacrificial layer. The paint underneath stays untouched.

Why stretch matters on some panels

The more relevant difference in practice is how far the film can be pulled without creasing.

That is not a side note but part of the design: our precut shapes are calculated so that the film only reaches its final form once stretched. That is why a panel sometimes looks slightly undersized when you unpack it. It fits once you apply it.

On flat panels you will not notice any of this. On doors, sills and rocker panels the Standard film goes on without trouble as well.

It is different on strongly curved panels. A bumper is curved in several directions at once, as are the fenders and the leading edge of the bonnet. There the film has to stretch, not just bend. The TPU is more forgiving about it, and that makes it noticeably more pleasant for a first self-installation.

From experience: if you are applying film for the first time and starting with the bumper, the TPU is the more relaxed choice. Not because of the self-healing, but because it behaves more forgivingly around the curve. On the door sills you will not notice any difference at all.

Something that matters at least as much with both films: temperature. Below 20 °C any transparent paint protection film turns stubborn and the adhesive cures more slowly. A warm garage replaces a fair amount of experience.

The point at which you take the film off again

A paint protection film is not something that stays on the car forever. The adhesive bonds more and more firmly with the paint over the years.

With the Standard film we therefore recommend removal after five years at the latest. Wait considerably longer and you make the removal unnecessarily hard on yourself. The TPU has more headroom here: up to nine years.

For most people that is the real difference. Not „lasts longer" in the sense of looking better, but: how long are you allowed to leave it on at all?

What it comes to per year

Using the Frontkit for the Model Y „Juniper" as an example:

  • Standard PPF: 249 euros for around 5 years, so roughly 50 euros per year
  • High-End TPU: 373.50 euros for around 9 years, so roughly 41.50 euros per year

Spread over its life the more expensive film is therefore the cheaper one, provided you keep the car for that long.

And that is where an honest look at reality pays off: most of our customers own their Tesla for less than five years. The lease runs out, the car is sold while still under warranty, or it is simply time for the next model, with a facelift, new functions and better equipment.

So if you hand your car back after three or four years, with the TPU you are paying for several years of service life you will never use. On a three-year lease the calculation clearly turns around.

The short decision guide

Standard PPF suits you if

  • you lease the car or will be handing it on before long
  • you are covering flat panels: doors, rocker panels, door sills, boot sill
  • you want to cover the largest area first and the budget is limited

High-End TPU suits you if

  • you are keeping the car for a long time or care about resale value
  • you are covering strongly curved panels: bumper, fenders, bonnet
  • you want the surface to still look flawless years from now
  • you use the car wash often, that is exactly where the scratches come from that TPU gets rid of again

Can you mix the two?

Yes, and plenty of people do exactly that. You choose the film quality per product, not once for the whole order.

The common combination: TPU on the front, where the stones hit and the shapes are demanding. Standard on the flat side panels.

Visually it does not show. Both films are transparent gloss. You will only spot a minimal difference where two panels meet directly and you look at them from the right angle.

In short

Both protect you from stone chips. The TPU may stay on the car longer, is more forgiving during installation and makes fine scratches disappear again with warmth. If you drive the car for a long time, it even works out cheaper per year.

If not, the Standard film is not a compromise but simply the more suitable choice.
